DESCRIPTION: Under close supervision, learns to perform the routine field and office work involved in planning activities and programs; does other related duties.



SPECIFIC TO THE POSITION: The Planner Trainee position will be responsible for learning and implementing one or more of the following: Complete GIS mapping products; assess existing tidal waterbody public access locations in the field to document physical conditions; review municipal master plans for consistency with public access requirements. Encourage appropriate use of nature-based mitigation strategies (e.g. living shorelines, wetlands restoration) and identify coastal shoreline problem areas-flooding, erosion and wetlands loss. Assist with Coastal Vulnerability Assessments, Getting to Resilience Reports and community engagement. Research and create educational information on resiliency tools and mitigation strategies that address coastal hazards. The Planner Trainee should possess excellent organizational, communications (both verbal and written) and analytical skills. Be proficient in Microsoft Office products including Word, Excel and PowerPoint. Applicants with a high level of GIS skills are preferred.
REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree including or supplemented by twenty-one semester hour credits in professional planning subjects such as the principles of land use planning, history of city planning, planning project design


and planning law and administration. NOTE: A valid license as a Professional Planner issued by the New Jersey State Board of Professional Planners may be substituted for the Bachelor's degree. NOTE: All college degrees (both U.S. and non-U.S.) and/or transcripts from a college or university must already be evaluated for accreditation by the closing date of the posting. Failure to comply with this requirement may result in ineligibility.

License: Appointees will be required to possess a valid driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.


RESIDENCY: All persons newly hired on or after September 1, 2011 have one year from the date of employment to establish, and then maintain principal residence in the State of New Jersey subject to the provisions of N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L.2011, Chapter 70), also known as the “New Jersey First Act”.




AUTHORIZATION TO WORK: Selected candidates must be authorized to work in the United States according to the Department of Homeland Security, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Regulations.
