My name is David Beavers. I’m a Campaign Organizer with Environment New Jersey, a statewide, citizen-based environmental non-profit based in New Brunswick.
I run Environment New Jersey’s solar energy campaign. I’m working to engage the public in order to build political will around generating 20% of our electricity in state from solar energy by 2025. New Jersey has historically been a leader in clean energy development, and adopting and meeting this goal would help solidify our leadership in the transition to a clean energy economy.

What does Environment New Jersey do?
Environment New Jersey is a statewide, citizen-based environmental advocacy organization working to protect our open spaces, clean up our air and water, and promote renewable energy development. This spring, we’re focusing on mobilizing the political power to build a clean energy future in New Jersey, powered by clean, solar energy.
What do interns with Environment New Jersey do?
You’ll generate buzz in the media, build coalitions, organize events and lobby decision-makers. Ultimately, you’ll help us build the kind of public support it takes to win. You’ll bottom line diverse facets of the campaign and learn transferable skills in the following areas:
- Communications and Event Planning: We need to raise the profile of solar in the media and spread our message that bold political leadership is necessary to supplant the status quo of dirty energy. As an intern, you’ll help us generate positive media coverage. You’ll stage press conferences to release our research reports, build relationships with reporters, and get your own letters to the editor published.
- Coalition Engagement: To have the political leverage to promote good clean energy policy, we need to expand our reach by working with other groups and individuals. As an intern, you’ll attend city council meetings to present solar resolutions and contact business owners to pitch endorsement letters.
- Design and Digital Media: To engage the broadest possible audience, we need attractive and informative campaign materials and innovative digital media strategies. As an intern, you’ll design the “face” of our campaign, take charge of Environment NJ’s Facebook and Twitter accounts to keep our followers up-to-date, and use new platforms like Thunderclap to spread our message.
- Grassroots: We can’t outspend the special interests fighting solar, but we can out-organize them. As an intern, you’ll work to build the base needed to show our political leaders there’s overwhelming public support for transitioning from fossil fuels to renewable, solar energy. You’ll collect petitions, generate campaign calls, lobby decision-makers yourself, and organize deliver events.
