Archaeology?????

REASONS TO JOIN ARCHAEOLOGY CLUB
EXPLORE THE PAST, IMPROVE THE FUTURE
  INFO/1ST MTG, WED, 4/2, BIO 206, 6-7/7:30 PM

 FREE FOOD

Hello Professor:

Because backgrounds in environmental sciences and ecological studies help to provide a good foundation in Archaeology, students with such backgrounds can contribute a lot to the Archaeology Club.

The organization is called a Club, but it is meant to be an Assembly, to give students the chance to make a difference at and outside of RU and to help them build up their resumes (as in volunteer opportunities, FREE practical experience, leadership opportunities, etc.). Because archaeology is a very interdisciplinary field, contributions from all (academic) perspectives are welcome and necessary to make an impact. so everyone's voice counts. On Wednesday, we will brainstorm goals for the drafting of a petition to create an Archaeology major at RU and to (re)hire Archy professors. Also, this will be a chance for students to voice additional problems that they see in Archy and Archy-related fields and after the meeting, we'll start an online poll for the student body to decide on the most important problems that they can help to change! Food and refreshments will also be served.

Thank you,
Siri Chevva

Internships and careers with Fund for the Public Interest

Subject: Job Opportunities Making Social Change (Summer and Career)

Hey! My name is Dan DeRosa. I graduated from Rutgers in 2010 and have since been working as a Field Organizer with the Fund for the Public Interest and Environment New Jersey. I’ll be back on campus Tuesday-Thursday (March 31-April 2) hiring students to work with us this summer on our campaigns.

Apply now at www.JobsThatMatter.org or call 1-800-75-EARTH today. If you’re graduating, please ask about career opportunities.

The Fund for the Public Interest is a national non-profit organization that works to build support for environmental and social change organizations across the country.  We run campaigns for the Human Rights Campaign, Environment America and PIRG. This summer we will be in over 50 cities, including here in New Jersey in New Brunswick, Summit and Ridgewood working and lobbying to help win environmental and social justice campaigns.

This summer our staff will work to make sure we tackle Global Warming, protect our Clean Water, work to get big money out of politics, label GMO foods and protect our drinking water from Fracking – and build valuable leadership skills along the way. Around the country we’ll work to ban plastic bags, get more clean energy, and protect LGBTQ rights.

Currently, we have paid positions open on our campaign staff in each of our locations.  We require that interested candidates are hard workers and have excellent communication skills.

As a member of our staff, you will fundraise, build membership for our partner groups, and educate and activate citizens on pressing issues. You will also have the opportunity to organize press conferences and build coalitions with other non-profit organizations.  While on staff, you gain knowledge of pressing concerns our country is facing, learn how to effectively generate public support, and obtain a firm understanding of the political process.

We will hold information sessions and interviews at Rutgers on Tuesday-Thursday (March 31-April 2) at 10 AM, 2 PM, 4 PM, 6 PM. We will be at 2 locations each day; come to whichever location and time is most convenient for you.

On Tuesday, March 31 we will have information sessions in the Busch Campus Center Room 117 and Livingston Student Center Room 109.

On Wednesday & Thursday, April 1 and 2 we will have information sessions in the College Avenue Rutgers Student Center Cap and Skull Room 413 and Livingston Student Center Room 109. On Thursday we will have additional 3:00 and 7:00 info sessions.

To find out more and apply, please visit www.JobsThatMatter.org or call 1-800-75-EARTH.

We also have internship opportunities available with Environment America in Trenton, across NJ, and across the country, the deadline to apply is April 11th. You can submit an application at http://www.environmentamerica.org/internships or email dderosa@environmentnewjersey.org. If you’re graduating and would like to learn about a variety of careers working in the public interest please email me!

Graduate position at U. of Toronto

A PhD graduate student position is available in Miriam Diamond's lab (University of Toronto) to pursue research into modelling the sources, fate and distribution of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in the indoor environment.

The research is part of a 3-year project funded by Health Canada (Clean Air Regulatory Agenda) that is being conducted in conjunction with Cancer Care Ontario.  The goal of project is to qualitatively and quantitatively understand types and strength of emission sources and the indoor partitioning and fate of SVOCs, with the aim of improving our ability to estimate indoor exposures to these compounds.

The modelling component of the project entails improving the fugacity-based indoor model from our lab (Zhang X. et al. 2009, 2011[1]), evaluating the model using measured indoor air concentrations and environmental characteristics, and using data from the Health Canada study to fulfil the study’s goal.

Applicants should hold a master’s degree or an undergraduate degree with relevant experience.  A background in chemical engineering and/or environmental science is preferable with familiarity with mass balance models and computer programming.  Applicants require proficiency in written and spoken English.  Publishing in the peer-review literature and presenting results at international conferences will be expected.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant multidisciplinary and multicultural lab, with the general goal of connecting sources and emissions with ecological and human exposure to chemical contaminants, leading to policies and measures to mitigate exposure.

To apply: Applicants should provide a letter expressing your interest in this project and explaining how this project would fit with your career goals, plus a CV or resume.  Please also send the names and email addresses of two referees.  Please send all information electronically to Miriam Diamond, miriam.diamond@utoronto.ca.

All applicants will be considered although preference will be given to suitably qualified Canadians and Canadian Landed Immigrants.  Project funding is available for a minimum of 3 years.  Applications will be reviewed starting on 30 April, 2014 and will continue until the position is filled.
