URL: https://www.epa.gov/P3/p3-funding-opportunities

Open Dates: Dec. 21, 2017 through Feb. 7, 2018

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announces the release of the 15th Annual P3 Awards: A National Student Design Competition Focusing on People, Prosperity and the Planet (P3) Phase I Request for Applications (RFA). This collegiate design competition promotes the use of scientific and engineering principles in creating innovative projects to address challenges and develop real world solutions. This RFA is seeking applications in the research areas of air quality, clean and safe water, land revitalization, and safer chemicals in the marketplace.

Join us in January 2018 for an informational webinar about the P3 RFA and application process. Webinar details will be posted early January on the P3 website, don’t miss it!

P3 Program:

The P3 program is a two-phase team competition. For the first phase, interdisciplinary student teams submit proposals to compete for $15,000 grants for project ideas addressing environmental solutions. Recipients use the funding to research and develop their design projects during the academic year. In the spring, teams compete for P3 Phase II grant funding of up to $75,000 to implement their projects in a real world setting.

P3 was developed to foster progress by achieving the mutual goals of improved quality of life, economic prosperity, and protection of the planet - people, prosperity and the planet. EPA’s P3 Program offers technical solutions to implement while supporting education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). These grants propel the next generation of scientists, engineers, and researchers to think critically about current events and develop innovative solutions.

Graduate study at U of Iowa

The Sustainable Water Development (SWD) Graduate Program within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Iowa is currently seeking 5-10 outstanding students to begin their MS or PHD in Fall 2018. In this NSF NRT-funded program, students will become a highly-trained water professional ready to meet the resource challenges of communities most in need as a professional engineer, researcher, educator, and more. This is not a "one-size-fits-all" graduate program. Students can tailor the curriculum to fit their unique interests and career goals - everything from politics to public health, chemistry to microbiology, and informatics to entrepreneurship and beyond - all while earning a generous student stipend. Prestigious NRT Fellowships are also available for the most meritorious applicants. All undergraduate STEM majors are eligible and encouraged to apply. Our first cohort of 17 SWD trainees came from fields including environmental science, meteorology, hydrology and more. SWD students conduct innovative research at the food, energy and water nexus, focusing on the impacts of climate change, resource recovery from waste, technologies for sustainable and healthy communities, and more. Community service and professional development experiences, including immersive internships with diverse project partners, complement this transformative research. You can learn more about the SWD program, read about the courses offered, and meet our current trainee cohort by visiting our website: https://na01.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Furldefense.proofpoint.com%2Fv2%2Furl%3Fu%3Dhttps-3A__waterhawks.uiowa.edu%26d%3DDwIFaQ%26c%3DnE__W8dFE-shTxStwXtp0A%26r%3D5S8YxXP7xbnI8w9LCIRzZPWJ9I_lsiitlP6WTvGp7Cs%26m%3DdUxQSMBqrGJ5X4dwW7hV-KjB3YGgfXTS17s6MvyYZ0E%26s%3DX7gjUmd1vaIcn_B7w41dD4h_gXMQWIQAaviMbffUhHA%26e&data=02%7C01%7Cstrom%40envsci.rutgers.edu%7Cc644a6338bbb4f6fbebd08d5430c8d8b%7Cb92d2b234d35447093ff69aca6632ffe%7C1%7C0%7C636488643555960364&sdata=d6QF%2BVaoW9GLbEJbzRPWUsQTVykrMRRZMSuV6hks260%3D&reserved=0=.
