Energy Innovation Contest

[[If you are interested in competing in the REI Energy Innovation Contest, please email me at Rodenburg@envsci.rutgers.edu]]

The Rutgers Energy Institute (REI) recently announced an Energy Innovation Contest inviting undergraduates to help reduce the energy consumption at Rutgers to make the university carbon neutral by 2030. Three prizes ($2,500 for first place, $1,500 for second place, and 1,000 for third place) will be awarded to undergraduate students or teams who have submitted energy reduction plans selected to be the most innovative, practical, and low-cost solutions.

The students are asked to develop implementable plan reducing student energy consumption on campus as well as promoting awareness about smarter eco-friendly practices across campus. The plans should contain an analysis of costs and energy savings, a timeline for implementation, and suggestions for how the plan can be implemented and how the costs and energy savings were calculated.

This is an opportunity for the students to draw upon all the resources that Rutgers has to offer and to truly make use of the interdisciplinary pool of knowledge that is made available to them. However, we recognize that it can be daunting for an undergraduate focused on the task load required by a major to venture outside familiar areas of knowledge.

To that end, the REI asks the faculty to identify the students in your classes who may be interested in this opportunity, to help them get thinking about initial ideas, suggest contact within other departments, and form teams with fellow students. By providing support and guidance, you will give your students the opportunity to think and work in a broadened perspective.

The submission deadline is March 23, 2015. Register for the competition by sending an email indicating intent to submit an entry to Beatrice Birrer at bea@marine.rutgers.edu by February 27, 2015. Please use “Energy Innovation Contest” in the subject line.

The full details about the Energy Contest, including the application form and full rules, are available on the REI website at http://rei.rutgers.edu/. You can also contact Beatrice Birrer at bea@marine.rutgers.edu if you have questions.

We appreciate your support in this endeavor!

Cordially,
