The Schofield lab within the Rutgers Department of Marine and Coastal Sciences is seeking 3 positive,
dependable, detail-oriented undergraduate students to assist with oceanographic research in Antarctica this
coming year. The students chosen will be responsible for aiding in sampling and data collection for the Palmer
Long-Term Ecological Research project (http://pal.lternet.edu/), monitoring phytoplankton dynamics in
response to rapidly changing physical conditions (temperature warming, sea ice melt, etc.) along the West
Antarctic Peninsula. Accepted applicants will receive research credits, and all transportation, lodging, and food
expenses will be covered for the duration of research. Requirements:• Enrolled in or graduated from a B.S. program in marine sciences, biology, environmental science, or
related field• Must be able to take leave for a semester or coordinate with professors to complete classes remotely• Previous field work or lab experience is an assetPosition 1: September 29, 2018 to December 21, 2018• Based at Palmer Station, Antarctica• Responsibilities include field excursions out on a small research vessel 3 days a week deploying
oceanographic instruments and collecting water samples, processing water samples in the lab,
maintaining data logs, and basic data analysis. Will help set up the lab at the beginning of season. • 6-day work weeks, sometimes with long hours on field daysPosition 2: December 27, 2018 to February 15, 2018• 6-week research cruise down the West Antarctic Peninsula• Responsibilities include deployment of oceanographic instruments, water collection, and processing of
water samples in the lab.• 7-day work weeks, working variable hours including sometimes at nightPosition 3: December 27, 2018 to April 11, 2018• 6-week research cruise down the West Antarctic Peninsula, followed by 2 months at Palmer Station• See responsibilities from positions 1 and 2.
