Summer research opportunities

Greetings from the Urban Water Innovation Network (UWIN)!
Your help in sharing this information with interested students is most appreciated.

The application deadline of February 5 is approaching fast.

We are pleased to announce a new
Undergraduate Research Program (URP) for summer 2016. Ten students will be given the opportunity to perform cutting edge, transdisciplinary research of immediate relevance to people in urban areas. Students will work with mentors in one of five study regions in the Network: Mid-Atlantic, South Florida, Phoenix-Tucson Sun corridor, Front Range of Colorado, and California. Our goal, where possible, is to pair students – one in the social sciences and one in environmental science or engineering – to tackle an urban water problem from different perspectives.

For information, see below or go to: https://erams.com/UWIN/urp/

Transdisciplinary Undergraduate Research in Urban Water Sustainability

Ten students will join the Urban Water Innovation Network (UWIN) for 8 weeks in summer 2016 to:
  • Complete an independent, guided research project, working closely with mentor scientists, other students and the broader UWIN team
  • Attend a 3 day kick-off meeting at Colorado State University
  • Participate in skill building workshops and seminars in research methods, statistics, scientific writing, ethics, collaboration and preparing for graduate school
  • Attend a Virtual Forum on Opportunities in Urban Water Research and Management
  • Give an oral presentation in a final Urban Water Sustainability Research Symposium
  • Write a paper based on the summer’s research

UWIN URP students will work on individual research projects in their area of concentration, where the topics support integration across disciplines and connections to the national UWIN Network. In this way, students develop disciplinary and place-based depth while also learning across the socio-environmental spectrum, and across broader spatial scales.

2016 UWIN URP projects include:
  1. Use of Alternative Water Sources, Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, CO
  2. Energy Efficiency of Decentralized Water Systems, Colorado State University, Ft.Collins, CO
  3. Water Consumption & Conservation, Colorado State University, Ft. Collins, CO
  4. Thermal and hydrologic Properties of Pavements, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ
  5. Urban Flooding, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ
  6. Urban Energy Water Nexus, Princeton University, Princeton, NJ
  7. Hydrology of Urban Floodplains, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Baltimore, MD
  8. The Human Thermal Experience in the City, Arizona State University, Phoenix, AZ
  9. Urban Water Governance, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ
  10. Decomposition in Urban Streams, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ
  11. Urban Water Adaptation under Sea-Level Rise, Florida International University, Miami, FL
  12. Urban Water Systems Interactions, University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, CA
Dates:  June 6 – July 29, 2016 (8 weeks)
Eligibility:  Students that are current freshmen, sophomores, juniors or seniors that still will be undergraduates in fall 2016, who are citizens or permanent residents of the US or its possessions.
Award:  $4,000 participation stipend, room and board (or $400 food stipend); travel to kick-off meeting and then to research site. Some assistance is available for travel at the end of the program.

Volunteers needed

Laurie Johnson, visiting scholar at the RU Program in Science in Learning, is looking for undergraduate student volunteers to play a climate change pollution economics game as part of a teacher training session for the Citizen Climate Cost Project (description below). Laurie notes that it is  an exciting project, and the game is fun and educational. In appreciation, every volunteer will receive a small gift card, and there will be also be small prizes for players who make the highest (hypothetical) earnings in the game.
The session will be held in Room 108, Waller Hall, on the Cook Campus from 10 am  11:30 a.m. on Wednesday February 10th.
Students that would like to volunteer should contact Laurie Johnson directly at laurie.johnson@rutgers.edu with SUBJECT LINE: Game Volunteer. The first 15 students to respond will be invited.
Please share this note with your students.

An
Overview of the Citizen Climate Cost Project
The Citizen Climate Cost Project is a new project with the goals of educating students and the broader public about the social and economic costs of climate change, inspiring youth leadership within affected communities to demand climate change action, and developing a platform for simultaneously documenting climate change costs and getting climate change victims’ stories heard.
The project starts with an interactive classroom game and lesson on the economics of climate change, combined with a field assignment requiring high school students to go out into their communities and collect stories and data through interviewing climate-affected individuals. Students will then integrate their classroom learning, interviews, and data into a capstone video project that will be part of an inter-high school competition.
Through students, the project webpage, and social media, data and successful videos will be shared with the public, advocacy groups, and researchers. As a possible extension, if the students’ work demonstrates a proof of concept for citizen-based climate cost data collection, the University of Massachusetts will host an open access database, where citizens at large can directly submit their own cost data.
The project has received initial funding from the Alex C. Walker and the Kettering Family Foundations.

Do you want to be a teacher?

The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City is a chance to make a difference. This teaching fellowship combines coursework, mentoring, and real-world experience to prepare Earth and Space science graduates for a rewarding career as middle and high school teachers.
With a sole focus on preparing new Earth science teachers, the MAT program is a full-time, 15-month Master's program that takes place at the museum and in urban partner schools. We seek a student body with diverse life and career experience, and the application is open to all candidates meeting the eligibility requirements. All degree candidates will receive free tuition and books and a $30,000 living stipend. In return, candidates commit to teaching in a high-need school in New York State for four years.
We are currently accepting applicants for the class that will matriculate in June 2016. The application deadline is Monday, February 15th. We will hold an informational Webinar on January 26th, for those who wish to learn more about the program. RSVP to mat@amnh.org.

Please visit the program website for more information and/or to join our mailing list. If you have questions, you can also contact the program office directly at mat@amnh.org or (212) 313-7464.

We hope you will share this information broadly, and help us build a cohort of future outstanding Earth science teachers.
Sincerely,
Dr. Maritza Macdonald & Dr. Ro Kinzler
Co-Directors, MAT Program

Climate Institute needs a student helper (paid)

[[This would fulfill your experience-based education requirement.  Lisa ]]

All,

The Rutgers Sustainability Committee is planning a symposium for March 31st on Sustainability at Rutgers.
The planning group is looking to hire a very organized, reliable, responsible student who can help with conference planning including website development, registration management and other assorted tasks, starting asap.
The group estimates about 8 hours a week between now and end of March.
If you have any students that you can recommend,  let me know.
If you are going to have them contact me directly, they should go ahead and include a CV.

Thx,
Marjorie Kaplan
