Horticulture/Garden Intern in NYC

Horticulture/Garden Intern (seasonal)
Unpaid
Internship description
The Horticultural Society of New York (the Hort) is seeking an energetic and dedicated horticulturist to help with its garden projects. The internship starts March 2015 and goes through the end of the growing season, December 2015 .Projects are primarily sourced from supportive and affordable housing organizations, health service organizations, drug rehabilitation facilities, city schools, public libraries, and other organizations as well as private and public garden contracts. This intern will assist the Manager of Horticulture in carrying out garden maintenance and projects in a timely and professional manner. He or she will help oversee a work crew consisting of trainees from our workforce development program(who are looking to develop skills and experience as gardeners); and communicate progress on landscape projects to management.
For over a decade, The Hort's GreenCity program has provided low-cost landscape and garden design, remediation, construction, and maintenance services for under-resourced organizations and groups such as public schools and libraries, supportive housing facilities, rehabilitative institutions, and community gardens. The Hort assists them to help them create green spaces that improve the health and enjoyment of the constituents. Our professional horticulturists, horticultural therapists, and gardeners work with our trainees and local residents to create urban farms, communal gardens, green roofs, rain gardens and rainwater harvesting systems, along with other eco and green infrastructure projects. These projects increase food access, improve air and water quality, and enhance quality of life for low-income and disadvantaged individuals and communities in underserved areas.
Required qualifications:
  •  Horticulturist/gardener with hands-on experience designing, building, and maintaining gardens/farms
  •  Interest in working with at-risk populations
  • Knowledge of green infrastructure design and implementation
  •  Valid New York State Driver's License
