Environment New Jersey summer jobs

Subject: Summer Jobs for the Environment! Interviews at Rutgers

Environment New Jersey is back on campus this week conducting interviews and hiring students to work on our campaigns this summer in New Brunswick, Summit and Ridgewood. Sign up for an info session here: http://bit.ly/SummerJobsForTheEnvironment

This summer our top campaign is protecting the Jersey Shore!

The Shore is what makes New Jersey great, it's where we go to swim, hang out at the boardwalk or just relax and enjoy the beaches. It's the perfect place to be on a hot summer day.

Unfortunately, reckless development is threatening the Shore, washing pollution and bacteria into nearby streams and marshes— and eventually into the water where we swim and fish. As a result, there were 245 beach closings in 2012 alone. That's why Environment New Jersey is working to convince the EPA to fix the Clean Water Act— by closing loopholes that are leaving our streams and the Shore at risk.

AND to win this campaign we are hiring students across New Jersey to get out into communities, and build support for this issue. Over the course of the summer you can expect to make between $4,000-$6,000 and make $9-$15/HR. It's a great way to build your resume, like an internship, but you get paid.

Our info sessions this week are the last ones on campus and will take place at 10 AM, 2 PM, 4 PM, 6 PM & 7 PM Tuesday-Thursday this week.

Tuesday / Wednesday: Douglass Campus Center Meeting Room E (for the 10 AM sessions come to our table on the first floor of the DCC)

Thursday: Douglass Campus Center Lounge (look for the Summer Jobs posters)

Greenpeace

Greenpeace Activist Summit

We’re happy to announce a new opportunity for students this summer: the Greenpeace Activist Summit.  This is a 5-day gathering for people who want to learn the skills of grassroots organizing to make an impact on two key issues: protecting the Arctic from oil drilling and further climate damage and saving our oceans by pushing for sustainable seafood on campuses.

Where: Just outside Washington, D.C.

When: August 7 - 11, 2014

At the Summit, you will learn - through interactive workshops and trainings - how to launch an effective campaign to protect our climate and save the Arctic or to defend our oceans from destructive fishing. You’ll get to build connections and relationships with an inspiring nationwide network of Greenpeace activists and staff who will support you in succeeding.

More about the two focus issues at the Summit:

Protecting the Arctic: As climate change speeds up the melting of the Arctic, corporations and governments are looking to it as the final frontier for drilling and destructive industrial fishing.  Greenpeace is working on a global campaign to establish a sanctuary in the uninhabited areas of the region and ban oil drilling and industrial fishing in the surrounding icy waters.

Defending our oceans:  Overfishing is pushing our oceans to the edge; fish populations around the world are facing collapse in the next few decades.  Greenpeace is working to change the global fishing industry to adopt more sustainable practices. In the US, that means engaging major seafood customer - universities - to adopt policies that require purchasing only sustainable seafood for the campus, thereby exerting pressure on the industry to change.

Whether you're new to activism or you've been involved on other issues, if you're ready to make a big difference for our oceans and for the Arctic, the Activist Summit is for you.

Priority application deadline: May 2, 2014 - APPLY HERE

Changes to the Greenpeace Semester

Greenpeace’s student training program, the Greenpeace Semester, is undergoing some changes we want you to know about.

We are restructuring our student training and engagement work and we won’t be using the Greenpeace Semester name anymore since it may not reflect the programs we offer in the future.  However, we will continue to communicate with you a few times per year about the different opportunities for students, like the Greenpeace Activist Summit, Spring Break training, and others, so that you can pass the information along.

As always, if you have questions or suggestions about Greenpeace engaging with students on your campus, please reply here and let us know.

Sincerely,

Mary Sweeters  webmaster@greenpeaceusa.org

SEBS Student Ambassadors

Dear Faculty and Staff Advisors,

I am pleased to announce that Rick Ludescher and Bob Hills have given final approval to the establishment of a new student leadership opportunity, the SEBS Student Ambassadors Program.

The Office of Academic Programs-SEBS  is looking for enthusiastic student volunteers who have an outgoing personality, are knowledgeable about Rutgers SEBS, and can make a positive first impression with prospective students to join our team of SEBS Student Ambassadors! We need your assistance with reaching students in your departments. They don’t have to be your high GPA students or even ones with a lot of research experience. They have be fulltime students with at least a 2.0 GPA.  They should be rising sophomores, juniors, or seniors, and have completed at least one semester at SEBS. Below is some information to acquaint you with the program and attached is an application.  Please encourage students to attend one of our two information sessions or to see me in-person for more info.

The two meetings are scheduled for:

Wednesday, April 2nd  – 12:00-1:00 PM – Cook Campus Center, Merle V. Adams Room, Cook Campus

Friday, April 4th –3:00 – 4:00PM – Cook Campus Center, Room 202ABC, Cook Campus

What is a Student Ambassador?**

Mission:
Student Ambassadors are current students who act as a link between the university and the outside community. They volunteer under the direction of the Office of Academic Programs – SEBS. Their purpose is to share with the public information about the various programs and student services available at our school, and build community and support traditions at SEBS. Ambassadors are leaders that are dedicated to welcoming and introducing new and prospective students to Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. They use their own experiences to give people interested in university life an idea of what it is like to be a student at Rutgers SEBS. They interact with prospective students and their family/friends at Open Houses and other campus events; and assist SEBS faculty in their academic sessions at Open Houses. They assist the SEBS Administration in maintaining and celebrating the annual traditions of Rutgers SEBS.

Duties:
SEBS Student Ambassadors have opportunities to play vital roles in recruitment and college programs such as:
  • Serving as on-campus hosts for high school/transfer students  in the “Spend-A-Day” Program
  • Interacting with Prospective International Students via e-mail in the “SEBS International Ambassador” Program
  • Attending high schools and sharing their experiences with students through the “Return to High School” Program
  • Answering questions from visitors and sharing your experiences as Rutgers SEBS students  with the “Outreach Ambassadors” and “Transfer Ambassadors”
  • Assisting with the Rutgers SEBS School Induction, Baccalaureate, and Convocation Ceremonies with the “Traditions and Ceremonies Team”

Job Skills Acquired through Volunteering:
The program provides the Student Ambassador with an excellent opportunity to build your resume and gain valuable work experience - improving skills such as interpersonal and intercultural communication, customer service, team work, leadership, and working with diverse populations. Participants also build valuable connections with Rutgers SEBS Academic Deans and faculty in their major.

Time Commitment:
Minimum of 5 hours per semester

Qualifications:
Applicants must be fulltime Rutgers SEBS students (registered for 12 or more degree credits), must be in good academic standing (2.0 or better GPA), and have knowledge of Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences.

Application Process and Selection:
All interested candidates should attend an information session on one of the two dates below:

Wednesday, April 2nd 12:00 Noon – 1:00 PM in the Cook Campus Center, Merle V. Adams Room OR
Friday, April 4th 3:00 - 4:00 PM  in the Cook Campus Center, Merle V. Adams Room

Interested candidates will need to file an official SEBS Student Ambassador application. The form will be available at these events or in-person from Dean Sharice Richardson, Martin Hall room 201, 88 Lipman Drive, Cook Campus.

**This program is separate from the SEBS Tour Guide Program.

Thanks for your help!

Regards,
Sharice
