Subject: [Coastal_list] Student Internships at Field Research Facility in Duck, NC

Hi all,

We have 6 positions open this summer for student internships with the Corps of Engineers in Duck, NC.  To be eligible you must be currently enrolled at an academic institution.

There are two postings on the USA Jobs site:
1 for Undergrad/Masters Students: https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/365980600

The postings close on Friday, April 18th.

Specific descriptions of the 6 positions we are looking to fill can be found below, though the job announcement itself is generic.

Thanks!

Position: Electronics Field Support
The applicant should have experience with instrumentation and basic electronics knowledge.  Duties will involve instrumentation calibration, wire soldering, cable preparation, and gauge deployment.  This individual will assist with the rebuild of our linear wave array, construction and installation of temperature sensor string on the research pier, install new meteorological sensors, and assist in Argus station retro-fit.  The applicant will be closely supervised by Coastal Observation and Analysis Branch (COAB) staff.

Position: Computer Science Support
The applicant should be experienced with embedded system programming for control and data acquisition.  The duties will involve developing electronics interfaces between oceanographic sensors using inexpensive embedded systems.  This student will assist with developing the next-generation directional wave gauge (DWG) shore station (RTU).  Time permitting they would also help with the design and developing of a new in situ DWG system.  Also participate in the design and fabrication of wave staff data loggers with telemetry for data acquisition in Currituck Sound.  The applicant will be closely supervised by COAB staff.

Position:  Sedimentary Processes Support
The applicant should have experience in collecting, processing and analyzing oceanographic instrument data. Experience working in a sedimentary lab is also preferred.  The student will be exposed to several aspects of the research process, from the collection of field measurements and processing of data to the servicing of instruments and equipment used to collect the data. These responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

·         Deploying and retrieving oceanographic instruments in shallow estuarine environments
·         Collection of water column and suspended sediment calibration data
·         Processing water column and sediment samples for a variety of analyses
·         Sedimentary lab analyses including bulk density, grain size, porosity and carbon-sensitive measurements
·         Data entry and analysis
·         Support of field data collection activities
·         Participation as a crew member on an amphibious vessel or boat
The applicant will be closely supervised by COAB staff.

Position:  Remote Sensing Support
We are looking for a Masters level or higher student to intern with our remote sensing R&D team at the Field Research Facility.  Our projects include the collection, processing, and analysis of large remotely sensed data sets including terrestrial lidar, X-band radar, video, and infrared data, in order to both develop new measurement and observational techniques and also improve our understanding of coastal morphodynamics.  The ideal candidate should have a strong programming background and experience working with large spatial data sets.  Strong organizational skills and an ability to code independently in MATLAB is a must, and you will be expected to creatively “tinker” with data.   Potential projects may include: lidar point cloud co-registration, feature detection and digitization, and development of code systems for automated processing.  The applicant will be closely supervised by COAB staff.

Position:  GIS Mapping Support
The applicant should have experience in cartography and basic mapping experience. The student will compile topographic, bathymetric and other data for creation of thematic map products and presentation materials for research projects. Operates complex computer systems and software packages and develops procedures to produce intricately detailed maps and graphics for many varied water resources and coastal process research projects. Student will apply geographic and cartographic principles to the resolution of multi-disciplinary issues in geospatial database construction and map compilation.  The applicant will be closely supervised by COAB staff.

Position:  Facilities Management and Equipment Support
The student will assist in facilities management and maintenance of oceanographic and estuarine research equipment and vessels.  Duties may include: metal and wood fabrication, operation of forklifts and power tools, engine maintenance and repair, support of field data collection activities, routine monitoring of the status of oceanographic instruments, oceanographic instrumentation repair, and deployment and participation as crew member on amphibious vehicle or vessel. The applicant will be closely supervised by COAB staff.
