Be a mentor to first-year students

[[If you are interested, please contact me at rodenburg@envsci.rutgers.edu]]

I am writing to you from Academic Engagement & Programming, an office of Undergraduate Academic Affairs. We are currently recruiting candidates for the First-Year Interest Group Seminar (FIGS) Peer Instructor position for fall 2015. FIGS are one-credit seminars taught by junior and senior students to aid SAS, SEBS and RBS first-year students in their transition to college while exploring an academic interest area. During the fall of 2014, we offered 68 sections of FIGS to over 1400 first-year students. We are committed to increasing the number of FIGS sections we offer for SEBS first-year students and can only do so if we receive higher numbers of qualified SEBS Peer Instructor applicants. We could use your assistance in identifying high achieving students (current sophomores and juniors) who you believe are passionate about their major and would enjoy teaching and mentoring first-year students.

Please share this information with students you believe are qualified and may be interested in this opportunity and encourage them to apply. Many of our former PIs tell us they applied because they were encouraged to do so by one of their professors. Please also feel free to share this email with colleagues in your department or send out to student listservs. I will include language below that you can forward. If you would like to forward specific student names to me, I would be happy to reach out to them with details about the process and let them know they have been recommended by you.

Thank you for your assistance in encouraging students to consider applying for the Peer Instructor position. Your support of the FIGS program is greatly appreciated.

Lyn Krueger
