For EnvSci majors:
Part of our revision of our major last year included a long conversation about General Microbiology 680:390, which was required for Applied ES majors. 680:390 just did not fit our needs well, because it had Organic Chemistry as a pre-requisite and because it had a lab. Due to the limited number of TAs available to teach lab sections, they could never teach enough sections of 680:390 and our students had trouble getting in. In response to our concerns (and the concerns of other programs, too), the microbiology department has created a new course called Introduction to Microbiology (11:680:201). The course will be offered for the first time Spring 2017 (T,F 10:55-12:15 CDL 110). The course prerequisites are one semester each of chemistry and biology (i.e. 119:103 is enough). A generic syllabus is available on the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology website http://dbm.rutgers.edu/microbio/intromicro11680_201.pdf. Please contact Prof. Diane Davis (davis@AESOP.Rutgers.edu) with any questions you may have.
I encourage all EnvSci majors to take this course. Currently it will count as an elective, and I plan to ask the faculty to approve another curriculum change that would make this course mandatory for all ES majors.
