The
Region 2 Pathways Intern announcements are on schedule
for a posting date on www.usajobs.gov of
Monday 5/5/14. The announcements will close on
the day that 75 applications occurs, but applications
will still be accepted until 11:59pm that day. The
expected start date for the internship is 6/2/14 and
the end date is 9/6/14. The intern will work up to 40
hrs per week.

These potential interns should use this weekend to get

they have not done so already. Getting set up
includes: creating a user name/password for the site,
creating their federal resume or uploading their own
word doc resume, and uploading their unofficial

schedule) as one of their “Documents.” Other good
“Documents” to have uploaded to their account include:
a letter of recommendation from an advisor or
professor at their school and their DD-214 Form (if

Introduction
Serves as a Summer
Intern in the Pollution Prevention and Climate Change
Section (P2C2) of the Sustainability and Multimedia
Programs Branch. The Branch is involved in oversight
and implementation of sustainability, pollution
prevention, and NEPA programs. The intern will work
with the P2C2 program office in New York City on an
Urban Toxics Mitigation and Reduction project. This
project focuses on the greening of small businesses
located in areas threatened by extreme weather events
(e.g., flooding), through a combination of better
management practices (e.g., inventory control,
storage) and process modifications (e.g., substitution
of raw material inputs by safer alternatives,
engineering alterations to production chain).
Major
Duties and
Responsibilities
As an advance trainee,
the intern will perform a variety of program related
tasks, including:

Analyze production
processes, and identify potential
optimization/pollution prevention opportunities (e.g.,
green chemistry/engineering, supply change
management).
·
Develop of sector
specific technical guidance that will assist selected
business types (e.g., electroplating) reduce potential
hazardous substances releases through a combination of
pollution prevention approaches (e.g., operation and
maintenance changes, process modifications, chemical
substitutions).
·
Develop of
sector-specific case studies that are locally relevant
to New York and/or New Jersey. As part of this
process, identify examples of businesses that have
implemented pollution prevention strategies into their
business processes, including: best management
practices, existing case studies, calculators, tools,
cost benefit information, materials substitution, and
process changes.
·
Conduct data
manipulation and analysis through the use of mapping
tools that include Geographic Information Systems
(GIS) software and access to several “data layers”
(e.g., FEMA’s storm surge and floodplain delineation,
NOAA’s sea level rise, EPA’s Environmental Justice
assessment tool, New Jersey’s Right-to-Know database)
to identify potential geographic impact areas in New
York and New Jersey.

Assist staff in
preparation of materials for, and participation in,
briefings with Branch Chief, Division Director and
Regional Administrator.

assigned.
