I am Chathra Hendahewa, a PhD candidate in the Department of Computer Science at Rutgers University. I am currently working on my research under the supervision of Dr. Chirag Shah.

During the end of spring semester and over summer we are conducting a laboratory study (This study has IRB approval with date 07/31/2012) to investigate how people search information online. In order to run this study we need undergraduate students who are proficient in English (among other requirements indicated below). Participants would get compensated in cash (details are attached below) and the possibility to win up to an extra $25/person in cash based on their performance.

--------------------------Coagmento - Lab Search Study (Spring/Summer 2013)-----------------------------------

The purpose of this is to request your participation in a research study investigating collaborative search. This study requires a team of two/three for two sessions. All two/three participants must be between 18 to 24 years old. You need to sign up in groups of two/three. All two/three participants in a team should have worked on some project before (e.g., a class assignment), it is also required having intermediate typing and online search skills. You should be proficient in English language. The study will be conducted in a computer lab in School of Communication & Information (SC&I) on College Ave campus. Your participation will take about one hour for each session. Approximately 60 participants are being enrolled for this study. The study will involve using an experimental system, called Coagmento, while surfing the Web for collecting information that will help you to accomplish a task. Coagmento is a plug-in for Firefox browser, which provides support for Web surfing in a team. Each participant in this study will receive $25/person for groups-of-two or $30/person for groups-of-three at the end of both sessions. In addition, you will participate for $25/person in cash if you become the best performing team at the end of the study. Are you searching for an opportunity to put your studies in environmental science or ecology to work in a field setting? 

The Institute for Sustainable International Studies, ISIS, is offering ecology field courses in Belize that create a chance to study in the tropical, English-speaking setting of Belize and gain valuable professional and personal experience.  Belize’s rich environment, cultures and biodiversity are the labs for these courses.  About 40% of the land and sea areas of Belize are set aside in protected areas, parks or reserves to protect its diverse flora and fauna.  One student summarized his experience by saying, “The field trips were the best in the Marine Ecology class. Nothing like getting outside and experiencing first hand and being able to converse with the locals!  I learned a lot about the environments and problems in Belize and its culture and customs.  Take this course – I had a great experience.”

Our two week winter session runs from December 26, 2013 to January 7, 2014, including travel days.  The cost, $2,995, includes one course, accommodations, transportation to and from the airport, field trips and excursions, breakfasts and one transcript for transferring credit.  Airfare is not included.  Students receive three (3) credits from Sacred Heart College.  The application deadline for winter is October 1^st.  Our 2014 summer sessions run in June and July.   There are two week and four week programs for $2,675 and $4,225.  The application deadline is March 1^st for summer 2014.  Application forms are available on the ISIS website.

The Fund for the Public Interest is a national non-profit organization that works to build support for environmental and social change organizations across the country.  We run campaigns for the Human Rights Campaign, Environment New Jersey and New Jersey PIRG. This summer we will be in over 50 cities, including here in New Jersey @ New Brunswick, Montclair and Ridgewood, and nearby in Philadelphia, and Manhattan working and lobbying to help win environmental and social justice campaigns.

Year after year, I’ve seen our summer staff make a difference on critical issues. Whether its protecting the Jersey Shore from pollution, ending junk food subsidies to big-agribusiness, repealing Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, or tripling the amount of Solar Power in New Jersey – we’ve won on these issues and we’ll win this summer too.

This summer our staff will work to make sure in the aftermath of superstorm Sandy the Jersey Shore is rebuilt sustainably, we will take steps to tackle Global Warming, and work to get corporate money out of politics – and build valuable leadership skills along the way. Around the country we’ll work to ban plastic bags, get more clean energy, and protect LGBTQ rights.

Currently, we have paid positions open on our campaign staff in each of our locations.  We require that interested candidates are hard workers and have excellent communication skills.

As a member of our staff, you will fundraise, build membership for our partner groups, and educate and activate citizens on pressing issues. You will also have the opportunity to organize press conferences and build coalitions with other non-profit organizations.  While on staff, you gain knowledge of pressing concerns our country is facing, learn how to effectively generate public support, and obtain a firm understanding of the political process.

We will hold information sessions and interviews at Rutgers on Tuesday-Thursday (April 9, 10, 11).
