Jobs with Fund for the Public Interest

The Fund for The Public Interest is looking for graduating seniors to help run our campaign offices across the country. The Fund works on environmental advocacy and public interest campaigns.

Representatives from our New Brunswick office will be at the Rutgers Career Fair on Friday, February 3rd.

The Fund for the Public Interest is a national, nonprofit organization that runs campaigns for America’s leading environmental and public interest organizations. We launched the Fund in 1982 to help find ways to engage people on the most pressing problems of our day and turn that support into solutions. And now we run the nation’s largest and most effective canvassing operation. Our canvassers talk to people one-on-one and through those interactions help make thousands, sometimes millions of people’s voices heard, through petitions, emails, small donations and meetings. That’s people power, and that’s what it takes to make a difference for the environment, for our democracy, and more. We’ve been running grassroots campaigns across the country since 1982.

Over the last 30 years, we’ve worked on behalf of U.S. PIRG, Environment America, and others on a wide range of issues in all parts of the country. Our canvassers have gathered more than 20 million petition signatures, and we’ve raised more than $500 million to help these groups win their campaigns. As a canvass director, that’s what you’ll do. You'll recruit and train up to 40 staff, mobilize supporters, raise money, train activists and work to get thousands of people to take action for groups working to save the environment, protect public health and more. If you're ready to build people power for great groups and make an impact on important issues, then you could be ready to be a canvass director with Fund for the Public Interest.

If you want to learn more about our positions check out www.fundjobs.org or call our office and talk to one of the current Directors who will be attending the career fair on Feb. 3rd Our number is 732-246-8128.

Energy Innovation Contest

The Rutgers Energy Institute (REI) recently announced an Energy Innovation Contest inviting undergraduates to help reduce energy consumption at Rutgers. Three prizes ($2,500 for first place, $1,500 for second place, and 1,000 for third place) will be awarded to undergraduate students or teams who have submitted energy reduction plans selected to be the most innovative, practical, and low-cost solutions.

The students are asked to develop an implementable plan reducing student energy consumption on campus as well as promoting awareness about smarter eco-friendly practices across campus. The plans should contain an analysis of costs and energy savings, a timeline for implementation, and suggestions for how the plan can be implemented and how the costs and energy savings were calculated.

This is an opportunity for the students to draw upon all the resources that Rutgers has to offer and to truly make use of the interdisciplinary pool of knowledge that is made available to them. However, we recognize that it can be daunting for an undergraduate focused on the task load required by a major to venture outside familiar areas of knowledge.

To that end, the REI asks the faculty to identify the students in your classes who may be interested in this opportunity, to help them get thinking about initial ideas, suggest contact within other departments, and form teams with fellow students. By providing support and guidance, you will give your students the opportunity to think and work in a broadened perspective.

The submission deadline is March 27, 2017. Register for the competition by sending an email indicating intent to submit an entry to Beatrice Birrer at bea@marine.rutgers.edu by February 24, 2017. Please use “Energy Innovation Contest” in the subject line.

The full details about the Energy Contest, including the application form and full rules, are available on the REI website at http://rei.rutgers.edu/. You can also contact Beatrice Birrer at bea@marine.rutgers.edu if you have questions.

We appreciate your support in this endeavor!

Cordially,

Paul Falkowski Director Rutgers Energy Institute
Bennett L. Smith Professor of Business and Natural Resources

Part-time undergraduate research job using Matlab

Available immediately: Research assistant job, working with Prof. Gal Hochman, Department of Agriculture, Food, and Resource Economics, in collaboration with Prof. Alan Robock, Department of Environmental Sciences. As an extension of our work on the impacts of geoengineering on agriculture, we seek to study the impacts of production changes on the world food market, and hence on food supply.

We assume a multi-market framework, where demand for each crop is composed of food/feed, prices of competing crops, income, and where applicable, demand for biofuels. The supply for each crop is composed of production, prices of the crop, and land. We focus on a number of crops, including, corn, rice, wheat, soybeans, and sugarcane.

The student will use Matlab to program the multi-market framework. The data we have already collected will be used to calibrate the crop supply and crop demand functions for each crop, assuming an empirical demand for inventory. The calibrated demand and supply parameters are used to calculate the effect of each of the counterfactual scenarios on the observed price in a given year.

Requirements: Ability to program in Matlab, availability to work 10 hours per week, beginning immediately for the Spring Semester. There will be the possibility for extending the work into the summer. Courses in economics would be a benefit, but not a requirement. If interested, please contact Prof. Hochman at gal.hochman@rutgers.edu

Jobs with Fund for the Public Interest

My name is Joe Brambil and I am a Campaign Director with the Fund for the Public Interest, a national non-profit organization that runs campaigns for some of the nation’s most prominent environmental and social change organizations, such as Environment America and U.S. PIRG.

We are currently hiring students to join our summer campaign staff in more than 30 different cities across the country. Students will get the opportunity to gain first-hand experience in grassroots organizing, learn valuable communication skills and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of campaign actions including: running media events, coalition building, canvassing, and writing editorials, all while being paid as members of our staff. Our staffs typically earn an average of $4,500-$6,500 over the summer.

Students will get the chance to work on a wide spectrum of campaigns ranging from environmental issues like working to reduce global warming and fight fracking, to public health issues like stopping the use of antibiotics on factory farms or fighting for restrictions on cancer-causing herbicides.

I got involved with the Fund last summer, working as an assistant director in the Madison, WI, office, where I helped manage a team of activists on a campaign to get fast food restaurants to stop serving meat raised on routine antibiotics. I am now part of the summer staffing team, working to hire passionate students across the country to work in our campaign offices this summer.

The Fund for the Public Interest will be on campus Tuesday 2/14, Wednesday 2/15, and Thursday 2/16, holding information sessions and interviews. Would you be willing to send a blurb attached below to your students in order to increase visibility?

Also we would love to have a representative make a short 3-5 min announcement at the beginning of one of your classes. Please respond back as to which days would be best

Thank you for the consideration and I look forward to hearing back from you.

Joe Brambil

General Outreach Director

Summer Campaign Staffing

Fund for the Public Interest

---------------

Subject: Make a difference on issues that matter this summer with the Fund for the Public Interest!

What are you planning to do with your summer? Do you want to make a real difference, working to protect the environment or public health? Do you want to gain real-world experience and pick up valuable skills? Do you want to make good money?

Apply for a job with the Fund this summer, and you could get all of that and more. We’re a national, non-profit organization that builds the people power for America’s leading environmental and social change organizations.

We’re hiring in over 30 cities across the country this summer to raise money and get thousands of people to take action. You’ll make a real difference on important issues. You may be working to help stop global warming, fight fracking, get factory farms to stop overusing antibiotics or standing up for clean water.

You’ll gain real-world experience and learn valuable skills. Making change happen isn’t easy, but history has shown time and again that when we build enough people power we can win. But to do that we need people who have the skills and leadership ability to get things done. And that’s what you’ll learn with the Fund.

We have a great training program. Training starts the first day, and it continues throughout your time on staff. You will have the opportunity to learn how to lead a team, run news conferences, all while developing your public speaking skills, raising money and motivating people to get involved and take action… skills that will be valuable, no matter what kind of job you want in the future.

And, you’ll make good money.

Many people are faced with a tough choice for how to spend their summer. Do I earn money by waiting tables, painting houses or making lattes, or do I take that unpaid internship so I can get real-world experience, or work on something I care about? You don’t have to make that choice.

You can make $4,500-$6,500 this summer while doing something you actually believe in—all while gaining the skills and experience you need to help you succeed in the future.

This is not your typical summer job, but if you’re looking for a great experience where you can make a real difference, and work with some great people along the way, then apply today for a summer job with The Fund.

We will be holding information sessions and interviews on campus on Tuesday 2/14, Wednesday 2/15, Thursday 2/16 and want to meet with as many interested students as possible while on campus.

To apply, please visit www.SummerJobsThatMatter.org or call 1-800-75-EARTH (1-800-753-2784).
