PennPIRG is a consumer group that stands up to powerful special interests on behalf of the public for our health and well-being. With a strong network of researchers, advocates, and organizers, we are able to take on issues such as political corruption, product safety, consumer protection, and public health.
This summer, we are running an office in Philadelphia, PA to build support for PennPIRG’s Stop the Overuse of Antibiotics Campaign.
The overuse of antibiotics can breed resistant bacteria that would make illnesses such as pneumonia and post-surgery infections un-treatable. Public health officials, such as the CDC, have warned that our antibiotics will stop working if we overuse them.
However, 70% of our antibiotics are being used by factory farmers rather than people with infections. For our antibiotics to remain effective, factory farms need to stop overusing our lifesaving medicine.
Last year, we helped convince McDonald’s and Subway to agree to stop serving chicken and other meats that have been raised on routine antibiotics. Now we are calling on KFC, the largest fried chicken restaurant in the world, to follow suit. If we keep up the pressure, we know that this will create an industry-wide shift, and slow the rise of antibiotic resistant disease.
This is your chance to spend your summer and/or school year working for a great cause, while gaining valuable campaign leadership experience.
We have both part-time and full-time positions available for the rest of the summer and the upcoming school year. These positions offer salaries ranging from $9 to $14 per hour.
