Fund for the Public Interest

The Fund for the Public Interest is a national non-profit organization that works to build support for progressive organizations across the country.  We've run campaigns for USPIRG, Environment America, the Human Rights Campaign, the Sierra Club, Greenpeace, and Fair Share Alliance.

This summer, we are running an office in Philadelphia, PA for PennEnvironment to close loopholes in the Clean Water Act.  Loopholes in the law leave 60% of our state's rivers and streams unprotected from pollution.  Currently, more than 20,000 miles of streams are listed as "impaired" meaning that they are so polluted that you can't swim in them or fish from them, and you definitely can't drink the water.  The US Senate will decide the fate of these waterways this summer, and we need to make sure Senator Bob Casey is on the right side of the issue.

This is your chance to spend your summer working for a great cause, while gaining valuable campaign leadership experience and making on average between $9-14/hour.

This includes the Common Rule at subpart A and prohibitions and additional protections for pregnant women and fetuses, nursing women, and children at subparts B, C, and D. Research meeting the regulatory definition of intentional exposure research found in subpart B is prohibited by that subpart in pregnant women, nursing women, and children.
Research meeting the regulatory definition of observational research found in subparts C and D is subject to the additional protections found in those subparts for pregnant women and fetuses (subpart C) and children (subpart D). All applications must include a Human Subjects Research Statement (HSRS, as described in Section IV.B. Item 6 of this solicitation), and if the project involves human subjects research, it will be subject to an additional level of review prior to funding decisions being made as described in Sections V.C and V.D of this solicitation. Earth Day film festival

I am contacting you on behalf of Students for Environmental Awareness. On Earth Day, we usually host a mini earth day film festival. This year instead of just a one day film festival, there is going to be a week long film festival organized in cooperation with other organizations on campus. The Rutgers University Earth Week Film Festival will be going on from April 18-April 24. Besides film screenings, the organizations that are putting this on are looking to also add any other lectures or events that have to do with the environment to the calendar of events.  If you wish to have your event (or let us know even just of one you are aware of) as part of the festival, please provide us with the information listed at the bottom of the email. In the event that there is overlap between programs, we will still add it to the calendar of events. The whole purpose is to bring together the Rutgers Community and others and offer a wide variety of programs to people will appeal to everyone. We would be more than happy to have more organizations, departments, and institutions part of the first ever Earth Week Festival and hope that you would consider being apart of this!

Also, please help us spread the word however you can. This is the official website for the festival (http://rutgersuniversityearthweekfilmfestival.weebly.com/) and our facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/events/1591781161093650/).

Summer Job

Dear Professor,
My name is Michael Bralow, and I am a Recruitment Director for the Fund for the Public Interest. We are in the process of interviewing students for job openings this summer. I am hoping that you can send an email announcement to let your students know about our job openings.
As background, I work with the Fund for the Public Interest. We're a national non-profit organization that works to build support for progressive organizations across the country. We run campaigns for the Human Rights Campaign, USPIRG, and Environment America. This summer we will be in over 50 cites, working and lobbying to help win environmental and social justice campaigns.
Currently, we have paid positions open on our campaign staff in each of our locations. We require that interested candidates are hard workers and have excellent communication skills.
Our staff members will fundraise, build membership for our partner groups, educate and activate citizens on pressing issues. They will also have the opportunity to organize press conferences and build coalitions with other non-profit organizations. While on staff, they will gain knowledge of pressing concerns our country is facing, learn how to effectively generate public support, and obtain a firm understanding of the political process.
I am writing to you because we realize the best way to contact students is by contact professors in fields most related to our work. I am hoping you contact your students with our offer of campaign positions so we can follow up with them about coming to our on campus information sessions. We are also on campus over the next few days and would love to have the opportunity to give a brief announcement in your class.
You can get in touch with me via email at mbralow@fundstaff.org, or through our office phone 1-800-75-EARTH (32784). I am also adding a sample email at the bottom of this email in hopes that you can forward it to your students, or post on your schools social media pages, so that may schedule interviews ahead of time.

Go Fishing

Hi All,
The Jensen Lab is looking for volunteers for another season of our Shad &
River Herring Tagging Project. This project involves using a large seine
net to catch fish in the Raritan River, identifying and measuring the fish
caught, as well as tagging the shad and river herring. We use PIT (Passive
Integrated Transponder) tags to record the movement of fish through a fish
ladder at a local weir (similar to a dam) where we have installed a set of
antennas.
We will be sampling several times a week along the Raritan River, and this
presents a great opportunity for students to get involved in an active
research project. Our lab needs volunteers to assist with pulling the
seine, counting and identifying fish, recording data, and tagging fish. If
you are interested in getting involved with this project (or would like to
continue volunteering) please reply to Mario, our volunteer coordinator
(mario.hndz05@gmail.com) with your contact information (name, email
address, and cell phone number). Once we receive this contact information,
we will forward you a link to sign up for sampling days. Please check your
calendars ahead of time to be sure your schedules are clear (exams,
vacations, work schedules, etc).
Sampling will occur late through late May/ early June. We will supply
waders and lifejackets for all involved, as well as familiarize everyone
with the equipment and procedures involved. We appreciate your help; this
wouldn’t be possible without you!

Thank you,
Anthony Vastano

P.S. Please be sure to share this email with anyone you think may be
interested! (Classes, clubs, friends, other volunteers, etc)
