EPA fellowships

[[Students interested in applying for this should discuss it with their academic or research adviser.  These are highly competitive and you will not be successful without guidance from a faculty member.  Lisa]]

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announces the posting of the Request for Applications, 2015 EPA Greater Research Opportunities (GRO) Fellowships for Undergraduate Environmental Study with the goal of offering undergraduate fellowships for bachelor level students in environmental fields of study. Subject to availability of funding and other applicable considerations, the Agency plans to award approximately 34 new fellowships.  Eligible students will receive support for their junior and senior years of undergraduate study and for an internship at an EPA facility during the summer of their junior year. The fellowship provides up to $20,700 per academic year of support and $8,600 of support for a three-month summer internship.
Supporting these fellowships is in line with the Sustainable and Healthy Communities (SHC) Research Program. EPA’s SHC Research Program provides useful science and tools for decision makers at all levels to help communities advance sustainability as well as achieve regulatory compliance. SHC is collaborating with partners to conduct research that will result in science-based knowledge to guide decisions that will better sustain a healthy society and environment in America's communities.  The research is intended for decision-makers at the federal, regional, state and community levels.

Unpaid summer internships at NJDEP

The Office of Coastal and Land Use Planning (OCLUP) (http://www.nj.gov/dep/lum/lup.htm) at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has openings for unpaid internships for the summer and fall of 2015. OCLUP oversees the NJ Coastal Management Program and manages a number of planning activities, described below, related to municipal public access and resiliency planning in response to coastal hazards. This opportunity will provide students with real-life planning experience at multiple levels of government.

OCLUP requires excellent communications skills (both verbal and written) and analytical skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint is a must. For certain projects, students with a high level of GIS skills are preferred.  Interns would be based in Trenton but would travel to coastal communities regularly.

Interns would be required to work with OCLUP and municipal staff, provide GIS mapping products and assistance; assess existing public access locations in the field to document physical conditions; review municipal master plans for consistency with public access requirements and plans; and assist with the development of a Municipal Public Access Plan that is consistent with rule requirements.

Additionally, Interns may be involved in the following tasks according to the municipalities assigned:
·        Coastal Monitoring protocols and pilots:  Interns would assist with setting up monitoring locations for citizen monitoring of problem areas-flooding, erosion, and wetlands loss
·        Waste Management: Intern assessment of waste management issues and responses -waste from the ocean and waste from beach use
·        Resiliency Planning: Interns would assist with Coastal Vulnerability Assessments, Getting to Resilience Reports, and community engagement.
·        Infrastructure-Transportation, Power + Communication, Water supply, sewage and storm water: Interns would research and create educational information on resiliency from the North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS),  and similar documents addressing coastal hazards and mitigation strategies
·        Community Education and Outreach: Interns would help with community presentations and materials from North Atlantic Coast Comprehensive Study (NACCS), other state programs and NOAA on a regional or local basis
·        Urban-specific issues: Research and develop designs for urban solutions to specific municipal issues for SLR (non-traditional bulk-heading solutions, green infrastructure -keeping water out of CSO, urban public access and park systems appropriate at all bulk-headed locations
·        GIS of potential new public access and recreation asset locations: Assist with GIS mapping and data sets and may include work with PGIS/monitoring website

Please provide expressions of interest, a resume and two references to Nick Angarone at njczm@dep.nj.gov.

Summer Jobs that matter! Interviews at Rutgers

Hey! My name is Dan DeRosa. I graduated from Rutgers in 2010 and have since been working as a Campaign Director with the Fund and Environment New Jersey in New Brunswick. I started working with the Fund as a student, working to get more solar power in New Jersey – and guess what, we won! We'll be back on campus Tuesday-Thursday (March 10-12) hiring students to work with us this summer on our campaigns. Learn more at www.JobsThatMatter.org or call 1-800-75-EARTH today.

The Fund is a national, non-profit organization that builds the people power for America's leading environmental and social change organizations.

We're hiring in over 30 cities across the country this summer, including here in New Brunswick, to raise money and get thousands of people to take action. You'll make a real difference on important issues.  You may be working to help stop global warming, fight fracking, get factory farms to stop overusing antibiotics or standing up for clean water, just to name a few.

You'll gain real-world experience and learn valuable skills.  Making change happen isn't easy, but history has shown time and again that when we build enough people power we can win. But to do that we need people who have the skills and leadership ability to get things done. And that's what you'll learn with the Fund.

We have a great training program. Training starts the first day, and it continues throughout your time on staff.

You will have the opportunity to learn how to lead a team, run news conferences, all while developing your public speaking skills, raising money and motivating people to get involved and take action.  Skills that will be valuable, no matter what kind of job you want in the future.

You can make $4,000-$6,000 this summer while doing something you actually believe in. All while gaining the skills and experience you need to help you succeed in the future.

This is not your typical summer job, but if you're looking for a great experience where you can make a real difference, and work with some great people along the way, then apply for a summer job with The Fund.

We will hold information sessions and interviews at Rutgers this week on Tuesday-Thursday (March 10-12) at 10 AM, 2 PM, 4 PM, 6 PM. On Tuesday look for us in the Rutgers Student Center in the S Lounge on the 4th floor and on Wednesday & Thursday in the Douglass Campus Center 2nd floor lounge. Look for the posters that say summer jobs for the environment.

To apply, please visit http://bit.ly/JobsThatMatter or call 1-800-75-EARTH. If you are graduating, be sure to ask about career opportunities.

Lab tech needed here on campus

This would be appropriate for anyone who has taken 375:310 Analytical Environmental Chem Lab:

Hello everyone -
I am seeking someone in a lab technical position in chemical oceanography (Marine and Coastal Sciences), to start ASAP. Position is hourly and at least half-time, so most appropriate for someone with limited additional commitments (full-time students probably not appropriate). Primary need is for this spring-summer, but could extend further for the right person. Prefer someone with wet chemical lab experience and attention to detail, but will train.

Please circulate this as widely as possible.

Thank you!
